Canoeing, Lake Castaic
June 15-16, 2007

This trek was a training and conditioning event for those scouts and leaders attending the Northern Tier trek in July.

On Friday we arrived at the First United Methodist Church around 4:30 p.m. Mr. Tyndall brought a trailer full of canoes from the Verdugo Hills Council. We were packed and left at around 5:00 p.m. We arrived at Lake Castaic around 6:30 p.m. We set up the tents and cooking gear before we placed our camping gear in the tents. We cooked a special dinner that was reflective of the type that we would be eating in Northern Tier (could be carried easily and did not require refrigeration). We cleaned up, discussed the plan for Saturday, played cards, and went to bed.

On Saturday we woke up early, around seven o'clock, and took down our tents while the cooks made breakfast. Around eight a.m. we started to put all the gear in the cars and got our water gear on for the canoeing in the lake. We carried the canoes over to the boat launch and launched the canoes. We first where shown how to get into a canoe and then how to sink a boat by Geoff and Mark. Then we got in the canoes and paddled across the lake and back, then sank all of the boats. Mr. Tyndall and Mr. Ramirez showed us how to perform a two canoe rescue. We then practiced rescuing each other.

After we got out of the water we carried the canoes back to the boat trailer and had lunch there. We once again carried the canoes to the boat launch. We then paddled to the dam and back as we worked on our rowing technique. We packed up and left for First United Methodist church at around 1:00 p.m., and arrived back there at about 2 p.m.
