Goal: to build an outdoor courtyard for Special Needs students, so they have an outside place near their classroom to study.

Task: to install benches and anchor them to the ground so they can be easily moved or stolen. To create an natural enclosure around the courtyard to provide some privacy by planting shrubs and trees.

Description: I instructed 30 volunteers at my Eagle Project at 6:00 a.m. on safety and how to handle the tools, and then I assigned them to work in groups on various tasks. I marked out ahead of time where to dig, and they put the plants next to the markers so they would know how far to dig down. Next groups of 6 – 8 boys carried the tables over so we could have the largest objects in place so we could clearly see how everything could fit together in the space we had. We dug the holes for the trees and shrubs and added 2-3 inches for materials to be placed in the bottom, while the holes for the concrete anchors that would keep them in place where being dug. Then we installed the anchors and then the tables on top of them, Next I instructed people on submerging the shrubs in water while other scouts put rocks, fertilizers into the holes for the plants. They then planted the shrubs in the holes and covered them up. On the surface we made “trenches” around the groups of plants to aid in the retention of water. We ended early, in time for lunch.
